Derek Popke is the owner of the Victoria Hockey School and Vancouver Hockey School ltd., two of the most respected hockey schools in Western Canada. Derek is entering his 7th year with VHS.

Derek Popke is currently the skating coach for the BCHL Junior "A" Interior Conference Champion Penticton Vees. In addition to Victoria, Coach Popke also conducts the lower mainland's Vancouver Hockey School, alongside instructors including Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis and former NHL'er Garth Butcher. As one of the lower mainland's most respected skating coaches, Popke has worked with over 33 NHL draft picks, 3 1st round NHL draft picks, back to back WHL scoring champions, 3 canadian world junior selections, and a WHL rookie of the year trophy winner in only the past 5 years! Victoria natives and Canucks prospects Dan Gendur and Taylor Ellington also continue to advance their skating under his direction.

Through Derek's guidance, the Victoria Hockey School has attracted countless local students plus campers from all over the world including the United States, Europe, and Australia. Since it's inception in 2001, the Victoria Hockey School has sold out each summer with over 900 students experiencing life at VHS. The main reason for this success is Victoria Hockey School's oustanding reputation of hiring quality staff. "When selecting staff it is the school's priority to choose people with not only outstanding hockey knowledge but coaches who are caring and relate well to children and young adults," stated Popke. It is this formula that makes VHS an industry leader.

Derek enjoys spending his off time wakeboarding and travelling. He also enjoys lending his experience and expertise to the Victoria Hockey School. Derek is a graduate of Langara College (Human Performance / Recreation) and currently resides in Vancouver BC.
